The Women’s Center of Montgomery County is one of the only volunteered-powered domestic violence programs in the region. In addition to our thirteen member staff, the Women’s Center of Montgomery County has an active pool of more than 180 volunteers. Each week our volunteers contribute more than 320 hours of service. The Women’s Center requires that each volunteer contribute at least 52 hours of service per year and participate in at least 8 hours of in-service training on domestic violence and related issues.
PCADV (Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence) requires all domestic violence counselors to complete an intensive training course. The course includes basic information on domestic violence issues, active listening skills, cultural sensitivity, and options counseling and empowerment advocacy. Group discussions, experiential exercises, and role playing are utilized as well as extensive reading from the training manual. The training course is given by the Women’s Center several times a year in different parts of Montgomery County. The classes usually meet once a week for 8 weeks, 3 hours each week, either a day or evening session. In addition, a morning is spent at the Norristown Courthouse observing Protection from Abuse hearings. Trainees also must complete six hours of practicum time at one of the Women’s Center offices.
Activities performed by volunteers include:
