Women’s Center of Montgomery County Volunteers

Thank you for your interest in volunteering or interning and assisting victims of domestic violence. Volunteers and interns are an integral, vital part of our mission and our day-to-day success.  The Women's Center of Montgomery County volunteers/interns provide supportive counseling, information about legal options and resources, and advocacy services to victims of domestic violence. There are six Women's Center offices in Montgomery County: Elkins Park, Norristown, Bryn Mawr, Lansdale, Colmar, and Pottstown.  In each office, volunteer/intern hotline counselors answer the phones and provide supportive counseling and resource information during business hours.  Volunteer/intern counselors also provide one-on-one peer counseling.  In Norristown, Women's Center volunteers and interns work with the county courthouse legal system to assist victims who are obtaining Protection from Abuse orders.

The Women's Center has a 24/7 hour hotline where evenings and weekends are covered also by volunteers and interns who receive calls forwarded to their own homes.  These counselors are available to provide resource information, supportive counseling, and crisis coverage.

It is required for all counselors, volunteers, interns and staff, to complete the PCADV (Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence) training course. The training course is given frequently during the year on different days, different times (days or evenings) and different locations in Montgomery County.  It is usually scheduled as one session a week for 8 weeks, 3 hours/week. A fast-track training is also offered where the training is completed in 5 full days.  The training course provides essential knowledge and skills to the counselors who will be providing direct services to victims of domestic violence focusing on an empowerment approach.  Communication skills, the issue of confidentiality, factual information on domestic violence and its effect on victims, and advocacy skills are essential components of the training.  Role playing is utilized extensively to practice skills development.  One additional day is spent at the Norristown Courthouse to observe the judge who is hearing Protection from Abuse orders.  Trainees are required to complete a final examination and will spend practicum time where they are mentored by an experienced counselor in one of the offices.

The Women’s Center has a very busy community education program where volunteers and interns staff information tables at many events in the community, at educational facilities, and in conjunction with other programs.  The community education coordinator and volunteers/interns also present workshops on domestic violence for different groups including dating and healthy relationships presentation in schools. Many of the community education events are weekends.  It is essential that volunteers and interns have completed the training course, because those from the Women’s Center staffing the information tables are frequently asked for information and assistance at the outreach events.

There is a fee for the counselor training course which includes the training manual and membership in the Women’s Center. The Women’s Center required membership dues are $50.00. The training manual is either as book, $45.00 or a flash-drive for $5. If you prefer the flash-drive, you must bring a laptop to class to each day. Your contribution helps us to continue providing support to victims of domestic violence.  Cost will never prohibit someone from taking the training, no one will be turned away from training by financial issues. WCMC members receive the monthly newsletter and active volunteers participate in the in-service trainings and the annual Volunteer Appreciation brunch.
